Summit Entertainment has announced plans to make film exploring the hours leading up to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The production company has optioned an article from the New York Times written by David Barstow, David Rohde, and Stephanie Saul. The piece, entitled 'Deepwater Horizon's Final Hours' was an in depth look at what happened in the run up to the explosion and sinking of the oil rig, a tragedy that killed 28 workers and led to thousands of gallons of oil leaking into the gulf, damaging coastal areas and wildlife. It examined the movements of the men involved on the ship

Screenwriter Matthew Sand is working on the script.

''This film will portray the great heroism that took place last year on the Deepwater Horizon rig,'' Summit's president Eric Feig says. ''This piece in The New York Times evoked the raw emotion these brave men experienced and endured throughout the tragedy.''

Summit, best known for the Twilight Saga, will team with Participant Media and Imagenation Abu Dhabi to make the movie.
